Introducing: Father Longlegs

All the way from Westport, Connecticut, Father LongLegs is the enigmatic work of an individual who has been producing music videos for the likes of Solar Bears, Tobacco, fol Chen and Black Moth Super Rainbow. What I hadn’t realised is that the dude makes some pretty exciting boom bap electronica himself. Thankfully, this was rectified with the release of the Intergalactic Double Dutch EP for free recently.

Atari Teenage Riot

The techno-punk trio returns with a fierce album and views on creepy synths, the Thai Elephant Orchestra and sex in the internet age

The recent resurrection of early nineties Berlin-based cult band Atari Teenage Riot casts frenetic techno-punk music upon a new generation. Their anarchist-libertarian attitude pervades: dissect everything, bypass limitations. Digital hardcore innovators Alec Empire, Nic Endo, and MC CX Kidtronik spoke to Dazed to share their fascinations and motivations.

Dazed Digital: You mentioned that someone wearing a suit to a punk rock club could be the most punk rock person there because he is not conforming to what everyone else is doing. What influences your personal style?
Alec Empire: Some of our fans would kill me for saying this, but I find that fashion is way more exciting than the music scene. Designers take risks, most musicians can't. When I go to the Comme des Garcons store in Paris, I have ideas for 10 new songs. I love what Hedi Slimane did for Dior. Ann Demeulemeester… Alexander McQueen… Vivienne Westwood pieces work well on stage. It is important that the audience doesn't pay too much attention to what I wear, or it immediately takes away from the 'musical credibility'. In our time if you look bad and have a beard, people assume you're a genius. I'd never give into that marketing approach.

DD: Who are your favourite authors and visual artists?
Nic Endo: Guy Bourdin, Maya Deren, Stanley Kubrick, Simone de Beauvoir.
CX Kidtronik: Ramm:Ell:Zee (R.I.P !)

DD: What influences the ATR visuals?
Nic Endo: I began doing all the graphics and photos by accident. The previous designer had a nervous breakdown… I focus on bringing out sides that are not seen by most. For example, New York in the early eighties, old-school hip-hop, Afrika Bambaataa, Jonzun Crew, Bad Brains, CBGB’s, Blondie, Sonic Youth have more to do with ATR than nineties Berlin.

DD: What was the most unusual space where you recorded music?
Alec Empire: I recorded the album "Low On Ice" in Iceland in a tent in the nineties when we played there with Björk. It was freezing. Certain places make you create in a different way, if you're open to it.

DD: What are your favourite lesser-known music festivals around the world?
Alec Empire: Offset Festival in the UK and Berlin Festival in Germany. You are not treated like a cow on its march to the slaughterhouse. I am talking as a music fan.

DD: What are your favourite music blogs?
Alec Empire: Big Stereo.

DD: What are your guilty pleasures?
CX Kidtronik: Miami Vice television series, 1984-1989. Laphroaig single malt Scotch whiskey.
Nic Endo: Watching Mad Men and listening to Faith No More.

DD: You’re throwing a themed party. What’s the theme?
Alec Empire: Nibelungen.
Nic Endo: Belle De Jour.

DD: What synthesizers would you describe as the creepiest, the sexiest, or as otherwise distinctive-sounding?
Alec Empire: The Memorymoog is creepy. It makes you think of the darkest Portishead songs that haven't been written yet, those grey Sunday afternoons. The ARP 2600 is sexy, and it still sounds so modern! A new synth I love is the Metasonix Wretch Machine… love in the middle of a firefight.

DD: Which musical influences have you recently crossbred with unlikely genres?
CX Kidtronik: Nineties style horrorcore rap and Thai Elephant Orchestra music… a song that bounces back and forth from slow hardcore rap to gabber.

DD: Which ATR production techniques have changed since the nineties?
Alec Empire: In the nineties samplers played a major role. Now, software like Ableton, Melodyne, Waves adds to that. The goal is to make music more exciting, more alive, more physical. Create new worlds, instead of just creating the old world faster and easier.

DD: What are the current issues that ATR plans to confront?
Alec Empire: The most obvious one is Obama's politics. CX is perfect to criticize what goes on in the US. It is not as simple as it is often covered in the media. Important issues are cyberwars, sex in the internet age, human trafficking, the concept of government, nation states in a globalized world, and the death of the mainstream music industry.

Speed Dealer Moms

at least we have a signal of life of this project, very rare combination
Description

The second release on Venetian Snares' Timesig imprint:

We each come in with many drum machines, synths, modulars, fx, mixers etc. Our process is based on listening to each other's programming as we go, and reacting to that as we each program our own parts. Playing off each other in every stage as we write. We record live to stereo and as a rule with these, there are no overdubs and no edits. We don't know who will drop which of our many parts over what other parts which makes it a really exciting way to jam out a piece of music. This can result in drastically different versions of the same track.

These two tracks were recorded back to back during a Speed Dealer Moms session in early 2010. We noticed that we kept listening to these in the order we had recorded them as though they were already a 12 inch. This is how our first Speed Dealer Moms release accidentally came to be. Speed Dealer Moms is John Frusciante, Aaron Funk and Chris McDonald with many cats.

Get Outta My Way

Get Outta My Way from Bruno Vilardi on Vimeo.

Squarepusher presents Shobaleader

Squarepusher presents Shobaleader One - Megazine (taken from d'Demonstrator) from Warp Records on Vimeo.

Q & A with Squarepusher:

1. What is Shobaleader One?
Shobaleader One is my band. Last summer a bunch of kids got in contact with me. They were talking about forming an ensemble, which I thought was a ridiculous idea but I was impressed by their perseverance so we met up. Their idea was that they wanted the ‘fantasy group’ I had written about in connection with ‘Just A Souvenir’ to become a real entity that would record and tour. So we had a go at doing some recording and the story so far is documented on this record.

2. Who is in the band?
Basically a bunch of people who you may or may not have heard of from other bands and projects. Part of their idea is that this music is a completely clean break with whatever they’ve done in the past so I’m not allowed to mention any names. I can tell you that they are pretty frightening players.

3. What are the aims of Shobaleader One?
The overall aim is to articulate my music through the medium of a band. I always thought that a band would be a limiting thing. I’ve got very used to being able to make music by programming or playing without having to explain anything to anyone, and I assumed it would slow everything down if I had to. Actually it has made it quicker because I’m not trying to be four people simultaneously any more. I’m not over-explaining anything to them as they’ve got strong ideas of their own and I want to hear that in the final results.

4. Do you have live plans?
At the moment the plan is to tour next year after we have recorded more material. Playing live is part of the focus of this music. I’m really excited about playing live as this group of musicians is an extremely potent mixture. I’ve no idea what it’s going to be like touring with them as not one of us is what you’d call easy going. Every member of this band is a high-tension freak so who knows what’ll end up happening!

5. How did the Mr Oizo remix come about?
That was Pedro’s idea from Ed Banger. I’ve always had respect for that bunch. I thought it would be great because Oizo is on quite a different tip to Shobaleader One.

6. What’s next?
I’m writing more material for the band to record. It’s an ongoing experiment. Each one of us is trying to develop the sound of their instrument. It’s really exciting to be involved with instrumental players who are as into sonic experimentation as much as the actual music. I’ve also been in contact with Andre from Outkast recently.

7. How would you describe the sound of Shobaleader One and are there any
specific sounds, artists or albums that have influenced this new
direction?

We are playing my compositions, so in that respect it relates quite clearly to what I’ve done before, but as I’m not doing much playing or programming it is sonically quite different. It sounds more focused. Lots of musos end up just making their music a platform to display their skill. The great thing about this lot is that although they are great players they keep 99% of that hidden and just use it to give a very acute delivery of the songs.

Musically speaking these kids come from a metal background but they’re all bang into really slick R&B which I found quite funny at first but it’s making more sense as we go on. The basic premise at the outset was ‘space pop’ -a utopian pop music hallucination. It’s a stand against the affectation of knowing indifference in urban life and its corollary in music. I’ve always wanted to sabotage coolness as for me music is about laughing and crying, not about standing around smoking cigarettes.

Tricky - Puppy Toy

The third single taken from 2008s critically acclaimed album Knowle West Boy, Puppy Toy is a sardonic smoky bar-room blues track featuring a cascading piano riff and an infectious chorus, but most notably some pointed banter between Tricky and Leeds vocalist Alex Mills (signed to Tricky and Chris Blackwells label, Brown Punk). There may be a playful exterior, but lurking between the lines theres plenty of mercenary femininity and damaged goods to get your teeth into.

Dark, ruptured skies…

www.myspace.com/3musicuk
England based "Freedom" have a new production, called Ruptured Skies. Triphop meets dub you can say in this one. It has a very steady opening with obscure vocals and the sound of rain untill at one point a very deep sub bass kicks in (make sure you use a subwoofer). Reminds a bit of Massive Attack’s darkness at times! The perfect song to drive back in your car at night without your headlights on and just let your mind wander…
